Welcome to Universal Waste Training
page 1
This course is designed for those employees who may generate or dispose of materials that are considered universal waste. In addition, this course discusses hazardous waste disposal as it applies to the waste stream. This course provides information regarding the safe disposal of universal waste and hazardous waste.
The universal waste regulations can be found in 40 CFR 273 and the hazardous waste regulations can be found in 40 CFR 260-265. These regulations are also known as the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and were created to allow for easier compliance regarding waste.
All waste is considered solid waste, whether it be a solid, liquid or gas. Solid waste is simply the "stuff" you get rid of. Solid waste may be placed in the normal garbage for disposal. However, before solid waste is thrown away, it must be determined if it exhibits a hazardous characteristic. Hazardous characteristics include, but are not limited to, flammability, corrosiveness and toxicity.
If waste is determined to be hazardous, it may also be considered universal waste. Universal waste is characteristically hazardous, but common in everyday use. This type of waste is treated differently. If you have any questions on the type of waste you have, contact Risk Management and Safety at 895-4226 or email RMS.
