Welcome to RCRA Generator Training

Most of the regulations that govern how UNLV disposes of hazardous waste are found in the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Both the EPA and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection enforce RCRA through civil and criminal penalties.

Should you have any question about the information in this training, contact Risk Management and Safety at 895-4226.

Characterization

Waste must be characterized by its type (i.e. flammable, corrosive, toxic, etc.). This will help in determining how to dispose and store the waste.

Containers

Containers must be kept closed at all times. As a rule, if a container is left unattended, the lid must be closed.

Do NOT use food or beverage containers for hazardous materials, which includes hazardous waste.

Ensure that old labels are completely removed or obscured before adding waste to a container. And please ensure the former contents of the container are compatible with the new contents.

Inspect containers and labels for damage at least weekly. If housekeeping or storage is in a condition that does not allow easy access to every container, then regulators will assume you are not inspecting them.

Assure that the waste and container type are compatible, For example, do not store corrosive waste in metal containers.

Marking

The contents must be noted on the container.

Do not add words like “waste” to the contents description line unless you have been instructed to do so. For example, the difference between “waste” oil and “used” oil is significant.

Also ensure that the containers of waste can be easily identified as waste by RMS staff, as they may collect the waste in your absence. RMS can provide you with waste labels for your convenience.

Quantity

Always keep the waste stored and generated in your area to a minimum.

To request a waste pick-up, visit Request for Hazardous Waste Disposal and enter your information.
