![]() Welcome to Heat Stress page 1 Most of us look forward to the summer and enjoying the outdoors. And living in Las Vegas means that we must prepare for the hot summer months. However, heat-related illnesses are not limited to the summer; it can occur during any month and in any environment. The process by which the body maintains a stable temperature is called thermoregulation. In order to keep its temperature at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, the body will burn calories to produce heat when it is cold. Conversely, the body will also rid itself of excess heat in a hot environment. During this latter process, the body will accomplish this in two effective ways: sweating and dilation of blood vessels. When the body's thermoregulation mechanisms do not work properly, problems will develop. This voluntary course is designed to inform employees of heat-related disorders and how to recognize and treat some of these problems.
