Welcome to Fire Extinguisher Training

page 1

This voluntary, online course teaches basic fire science and how to use a fire extinguisher properly. Fire is one of the most common types of emergencies a campus may face. A critical decision in planning for this emergency situation is whether or not to fight a fire with a fire extinguisher or to flee to a safe area.

Prior to fighting a fire with a fire extinguisher, those involved must perform a risk assessment that evaulates the size of the fire, the evacuation route, and atmosphere in the vicinity of the fire. These concepts are briefly discussed in this course.

In addition to this online training, Risk Management and Safety conducts a hands-on training exercise where you will be able to extinguish a live fire. This training is offered once a month in CSB-164. Please check the Safety Training Calendar for a list of upcoming courses.

Please keep in mind that despite completing this course, you are under no obligation to fight a fire on campus. If you are unsure what you should do, please evacuate to a safe distance and call 9-1-1 to dispatch the fire department.

At the conclusion of this course, you will be required to fill in contact information so that you may receive credit for this course. If you have any questions regarding fire extinguisher, please contact Ben Fausett, Safety Training Officer at 895-4861 or email Ben Fausett.
